Know the Objectives (Purposes) and Qualities of Light

 

1) READ  Chapter 1 -- An Introduction to Stage Lighting (sections 1.01 - 1.09).

2) Know the Objectives (or purposes) of lighting.

3) Know the Qualities (or properties) of lighting.

4) Study the information below.

 


 

 

OBJECTIVES (or PURPOSE) OF LIGHT

VISIBILITY -- the No. 1 objective of the Lighting Designer!

3D MODELING (naturalism) -- “make objects and people look real (natural) or unreal”

COMPOSITION -- separate various people, objects, or areas of the stage

MOOD -- happy, sad, etc. 

ATMOSPHERE / ENVIRONMENT – hot, cold, warm, etc.

 

 

QUALITIES (or PROPERTIES) OF LIGHT

INTENSITY  -- The amount of light coming out of a fixture.

FORM  -- Patterns, (also known as templates or gobos), Shutters, Beam edge, Shadows, Lithos

COLOR -- All white light has color but you can also use various color medium such as gel and dichroic filters.

DIRECTION -- The placement of the lighting fixtures and the direction they are focused (or pointed).

MOVEMENT -- a change in any or all of the other properties of light while the fixture is on.
